Set in 2034, After AGI follows Theos, a disillusioned AI engineer hiding in a bunker after the technology he helped build begins to fracture the world. His only companion, CLEO, is an AI mental health companion he built a decade earlier, trained on his late sister's writing. As Theos retreats into making music to survive, a violent anti-AI movement strikes his former mentor and sends Theos a warning: he's next. He has to decide whether to risk his life for what he believes, or become another victim of the noise.
Using a practice-based research methodology, After AGI serves as a longitudinal case study in Human-AI Co-Creative Practice. Across eight months of composing, writing, choreographing, and directing a musical, the work documents where AI tools expanded creative capacity and where they threatened to replace the struggle that makes creative work meaningful. While existing research on AI and creativity has largely observed artists from the outside, this case study uses the researcher's own sustained creative practice across multiple disciplines as the site of inquiry. This methodological approach is uniquely suited to a moment when AI's impact spans multiple domains, making its effect on creative work difficult to measure. From this documentation emerge a set of principles for Human-AI Co-Creative Practice, such as the AI-Last Approach and Coordinate-Based Feedback. The work argues that the most dangerous automations are those that obscure what holds a work together, and that keeping the hard work hard, on purpose, is how creative meaning survives the age of AI.
